How to Read a Tocotrienol Specification: Why "85%" Doesn't Mean 85% Tocotrienols
Two suppliers quote you tocotrienols. Both datasheets say "85%." The prices differ by 40%. Neither is lying — and if you sign the wrong one, you will pay for vitamin E you did not intend to buy.
This guide explains how tocotrienol specifications are actually written, so that your next RFQ compares like with like.
Tocotrienols and Tocopherols Are Not Interchangeable
Vitamin E is a family of eight molecules: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. The chromanol head is the same. The tail is not — tocopherols carry a saturated phytyl chain, tocotrienols carry an unsaturated isoprenoid chain with three double bonds. That single structural difference changes membrane mobility, and it is why tocotrienols are formulated and priced as a distinct ingredient rather than as "another vitamin E."

The Number That Actually Matters
Most tocotrienol datasheets carry two assay lines, and buyers routinely read the wrong one:
- Total tocotrienols + tocopherols — the combined vitamin E content. This is the number usually printed in the product name.
- Total tocotrienols (T3) — the four tocotrienol isomers only. This is what you are actually buying.
A product marketed as "Tocotrienol 85%" frequently means total vitamin E ≥85%, of which total tocotrienols ≥32%. The remaining ~50% is tocopherol. That is a perfectly legitimate specification — but it is not 85% tocotrienols, and it should not be priced or dosed as if it were.
Rule for your RFQ: ask for the T3 figure and the tocopherol figure as two separate lines, plus the HPLC isomer breakdown. If a supplier will only give you one combined number, you cannot cost the material.
Palm, Rice Bran, Annatto: Three Different Isomer Profiles
- Palm-sourced concentrates run higher in tocotrienols relative to tocopherols, and are gamma/alpha-T3 dominant. Typical commercial grades reach ≥32% total T3 in oil form.
- Rice-bran-sourced concentrates carry a more balanced T3-to-tocopherol ratio, with a meaningful tocopherol fraction retained.
- Annatto-sourced material is the only commercially available tocopherol-free source, delta/gamma-T3 dominant. It is priced accordingly.
None of the three is universally "better." If your claim is on tocotrienol content, a higher-T3 palm or annatto grade is the efficient buy. If you want combined vitamin E antioxidant capacity in a lipid system, a rice bran grade delivers more total actives per kilogram.
Oil or Powder — Decide by Process, Not by Preference
Oil (clear yellow to red-brown viscous liquid) suits softgels, liquid supplements, fortified oils, cosmetic serums and any process where you can dose a lipid phase. It carries the highest actives per kilogram and no carrier.
Powder (microencapsulated, water-dispersible) suits tablets, capsules, sachets, dry blends, bars and beverage powders. Load is lower because the carrier is part of the mass, so always convert to actives before comparing prices. Check particle size and bulk density against your blender and tableting line before committing.
