A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the supplier's written promise about what is actually in the drum. For a potency-sensitive, oxidation-prone ingredient like vitamin E, a COA is your first line of defense against off-spec material, customs holds, and failed formulations. This checklist walks you through the fields that matter — and the ones that should set off an alarm.
1. What a COA Is (and Isn't)
A COA is a batch-specific document issued by the manufacturer or an independent lab, reporting test results for the exact lot you are buying. It is not a marketing claim and not a general product spec sheet. Always match the lot number on the COA to the lot on the drum and the invoice before you accept delivery.

3. Potency: IU/g and How It's Measured
Vitamin E activity is expressed in International Units (IU), now increasingly also in mg α-TE (alpha-tocopherol equivalents). Common natural grades:
- D-Alpha-Tocopherol: 1000–1490 IU/g.
- D-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate: 1000–1360 IU/g.
- D-Alpha-Tocopheryl Succinate: 1185–1210 IU/g.
- Mixed Tocopherols: reported as total tocopherols %, not IU.
Check that the tested value falls within the spec range stated on your purchase order. A result far below the lower limit means you are paying for inactive oil.

This is where you prove the material is natural, not synthetic dl-alpha:
- Specific rotation [α]ᴅ²⁰: natural d-alpha-tocopherol shows ≥ +24°; synthetic dl-alpha is close to 0° because it is a racemic mix. A COA without specific rotation cannot claim natural origin.
- Tocopherol profile: natural mixed tocopherols show a characteristic alpha/gamma/delta spread. A profile that is 100% alpha with no gamma/delta is a red flag for a purified or synthetic blend.
